Cairngorm Cycle Challenge
July 2008
Charly Mathers and Neil Mathers successfully raised over £600 after completing the 156 mile journey round the Cairngorms on 6 July 2008. The route started at Pitlochry and went round by Dalwhinnie, Aviemore, Tomintoul, Braemar and back to Pitlochry. The challenging route covered some of the hilliest roads in Scotland. The killer combination of the Lecht, the Gairnsheil and the military road to Crathie was particularly strength sapping. However the scenery was spectacular and this helped inspire the duo over the tough terrain. The climb of the Cairnwell took its toll of the riders late on in the journey but they held on for a big welcome from supporters at Pitlochry.
The time taken to complete the ride was 13 hours 29 minutes. Quite a few people had a go at guessing the time it would take to complete the ride. Times ranged from 5 hours to 17 hours, but Rebecca Main’s estimate of 12 hours 34 minutes was the closest; winning her a bottle of Tomintoul Single Malt.
